It's been over a week since the "Cake Boss" birthday party--and it's taken me this long to blog about it because it's taken me that long to recover!! It was a lot of work but fun too. Unfortunately the baby and I ended up with a cold that I am still fighting off.
I made semi-sweet and white modeling chocolate, colored it, and made it into a figure of my daughter. Given that I have no artistic background whatsoever and no experience working with this (or any other) sculpting medium beyond high school art class, I think this came out quite well!
We kneaded the modeling chocolate the morning of the party before the kids arrived, made it into little balls and bagged one semi-sweet and one white bag of it for each child.
After all the guests arrived, they had time for free play and then pizza and lemonade. Then it was time to wash hands and bring out the cakes! I had made individual 4 inch layer cakes, frosted them in the middle, and froze them. Giving them to the kids in the frozen state really helped keep the layers together and made them easier for the kids to ice (no crumbs coming off!)
Each kid got a bowl of buttercream frosting and a butter knife! I found the kid-sized aprons at a craft store and they served as party favors for the kids to take home.
Once their cakes were all frosted, they got to decorate them. I had sparkle writing gels, edible glitter, sprinkles, colored sugars, and one gift she got was fondant cutouts that they used on the modeling chocolate. I had one icing bag with a decorator tip and some colored frosting that they wanted to try out too.
The kids seemed to really enjoy the decorating. After decorating their own cakes, we boxed them up in bakery boxes I had convinced a local bakery to sell me and then it was time to sing happy birthday, blow out some candles and eat some cake! Here was the finished cake--I think it could have come out better but it also could have been much worse! It was very tasty, and was even more impressive for being egg-free, nut-free, and dairy free!
So, that was the birthday! Now--on to Thanksgiving!!
